Ha! I occasionally taught Win and Will Butler in priesthood. Their parents are in my ward and they are wonderful! I actually talked to their dad, Ned, about joining the Church so I could call him as my counselor in the Branch Presidency, he's a great guy and I think he gave it some consideration, but he wasn't quite ready yet. If you look at the history of the Butler's family you can see the LDS roots and musical roots run deep.
Thanks for sharing! I find the personal background of these artists so fascinating, and a lot of the time they seem rather reluctant to share (probably for good reasons).
Arcade Fire was a very special band to me back in high school despite having no idea about their connection to the faith back then. Makes me think there must be something that I was picking up on in the music at an implicit level.
Alice Cooper is pretty evangelical these days (but like, chill and nice about it) and had a youth music center and church in North Phoenix called "The Rock." Gotta love the name.
Also, no LDS rock discussion is complete without a Jimmy Eat World reference.
(Obviously I grew up in Maricopa County aka Salt Lake South.)
No way, I didn’t know their guitarist was a member! Looks like their original bassist too.
“But a speed bump slowed the Jimmy Eat World joy ride. It involved the band's original bassist, a young man who found himself faced with a momentous, life-altering decision, a choice that would definitely determine his future with the band. It was a curious and a distinctly Mesa-like quandary.
"He had to go on a mission," Lind says of the Mormon bandmate. "He had to make a decision to stay with us or go, and he decided to go. It was an odd situation, but it ended up okay. He did what he wanted to do, and we ended up with Rick, who's worked out really well. It could have been really ugly, but it turned out not so bad."

I like all these bands. Cool notes to read- since I no longer get albums with notes.
I am also a big fan of Orson Scott Card SF author.
BT Jug suggested that I should try and interview OSC—a bit daunting, but I might! Part 2 on Brandon Flowers trajectory comes out here tomorrow :)

I thought this was a great piece– just missing Tyler Glenn.
True! Had him in an earlier draft but ended up trimming that section down to three. Still one of the divers though...
